The Chilled Martini Espresso of Team-Building!

August 21, 2025

Very little gets me as excited as the concept of the Espresso Martini cocktail. I haven’t had alcohol in eighteen years - but a gal can dream. I’m a very big fan of caffeine and the idea of marrying it with espresso in a fancy glass of gin with a few teaspoons of sugar?! All I can say is, why eat food?

It’s this kind of thinking that got me sober.

Nevertheless, hearing about it brings to mind two thoughts. Julie Andrews singing “My Favorite Things,” in The Sound of Music, and the fun I have in any of our interactive laughter workshops.

I know, I know, as the founder of Laughter On Call I’m supposed to say these kinds of things. But in this case it’s actually true. For those of you from the east coast, I’m the Sy Sperling of Laughter On Call. He owned a hair transplant company in the 1970’s called Hair Club for Men. At the end of every commercial he’d look into the camera and bark, “I’m not just the owner, I’m a customer!”

Such is my fate with LOC. Last week I ran two workshops, one for caregivers sponsored by Direction Home in Akron, Ohio and one for a company called Electives. Each time after meeting and laughing with rooms full of strangers, I felt decidedly lighter. In one hour, using games as a structure, I learned fun quirks about people I didn’t know. Everyone listened, no one interrupted each other and in the end, people even shared a favorite piece of advice with the group. No coffee or alcohol was imbibed and yet we left energized and a little bit high.

I’m reporting this not only because chilled cocktails are top of mind in August, but also because maybe you don’t remember why you said yes to these weekly newsletters. This is why. Just a quick reminder of who we are and what we remain passionate about creating.

And for anyone new to the fold, here’s a quick “who are these people?” refresher:

  • Act I: We started by bringing laughter to people isolated by Alzheimer’s. And by “people,” the first client was my mother.
  • Unexpected twist: COVID. We took our services virtual and quickly, major companies started calling us.
  • Now: We’ve delivered joy and laughter to 20,000+ employees across industries.
  • Fun fact: Companies are starting to request us for bi-monthly sessions. So yeah, laughter isn’t just contagious, it’s also a little addictive.

To push another summer crowd-pleaser, a throwback to the ‘80’s before I even discovered martini’s, Laughter On Call is the “Ghostbusters” of low morale - in your office, your home or your parents’ home. Whenever you need this threat eliminated, who you gonna call?

I think we all know now.
